Photographing Cambridge
The Backs are the centrepiece: a strip of lawns and meadows along the Cam behind colleges including St John's, Trinity, Clare, King's and Queens'. From public paths and bridges you get stone reflected in slow water, weeping willows, and spring bulbs on the banks. King's College Chapel, seen across the lawns from the Backs or from King's Parade, is the city's most recognisable building.
The Mathematical Bridge, a timber footbridge belonging to Queens' College, is easily seen from the Silver Street road bridge, which is also where many punts set off. It is a lively spot for couples and families.
For a softer, rural look, walk upstream to Grantchester Meadows: open grassland, grazing cattle and grassy riverbanks, lovely for relaxed couple and family sessions at the end of the day. Jesus Green and Midsummer Common, north of the centre, have open lawns, trees and moored narrowboats along the river.
The flat landscape means big skies and long sunsets, and the light over the meadows stays for a while after the sun drops. Autumn turns the trees on the Backs gold. Summer is peak punting season, busy on the water but atmospheric.

Getting there and around
Direct trains run to Cambridge from London King's Cross and London Liverpool Street; the fastest from King's Cross take under an hour. There are direct trains from Stansted Airport too.
Cambridge station is about a mile and a half from the centre, so allow around twenty-five minutes on foot or take a bus or taxi. Cambridge North station serves the north of the city.
The centre is compact and many streets restrict cars, so walking and cycling are the norm, and the Backs, King's Parade and Silver Street are all a few minutes apart. Park & Ride sites around the edge of the city are the easiest way in by car. Grantchester is a riverside walk of roughly three-quarters of an hour to an hour from the centre.
Planning your shoot
Cambridge is busiest from late spring to early autumn, and the river around Silver Street and Quayside fills with punts on sunny afternoons. Early mornings are calmer and the light along the Backs is soft then.
During the exam period in May and June many colleges close to visitors, and graduation ceremonies at the Senate House, especially in late June, bring crowds to King's Parade. College grounds are private and usually restrict professional shoots, so plan on public paths, bridges and commons unless you have arranged access; your photographer will advise.
Grantchester Meadows and the commons can be muddy after rain, so bring footwear for walking and change for the photos. If it rains, the covered passages and old shopfronts around King's Parade give some cover.

If you want both the Backs and Grantchester Meadows, the walk between them takes time, so a longer session may suit; extra time is from £100 per hour. Travel from outside the photographer's included area is quoted separately, and punt hire is paid to the operator.
