Why couples book a session

Most couples have lots of photos of each other and very few of the two of you together. The reasons people book are simple:

• Anniversaries, from the first year to the fortieth.
• Holidays and trips, when you are somewhere that matters to you both.
• Just because: a new home town, a new chapter, or simply wanting a picture that is not a selfie.

Natural direction, not stiff posing

Most people say "we're awkward in front of a camera". That is normal, and it is your photographer's job to handle it. Good couple photography is mostly direction, not posing: walking together, a prompt to make each other laugh, or a moment to stop and lean in, with the photographer adjusting the angle and light while you get on with being yourselves.

The first ten minutes usually feel odd, and then they do not. Plan a session long enough to get past that stage, and choose a route rather than a single spot, so there is movement and variety.

Where to go, season by season

England changes a lot through the year, and that is part of the appeal.

Spring

Blossom in city parks and college gardens, and bluebell woods in late April and May. Oxford and the Cotswolds are lovely as everything turns green.

Summer

Autumn

Winter

Early sunsets, frost and city lights. London in the run-up to Christmas, and York with its walls and medieval streets, suit dark afternoons. Sessions just before sunset are well before 5pm in December, which is useful if you have evening plans.

Getting ready

• Clothes: coordinate rather than match. Choose two or three colours, simple textures and shoes you can walk in. Our what to wear guide has examples.
• Permission: some beautiful spots, such as the Royal Parks, National Trust properties and college grounds, may need permission for professional photography. Your photographer will confirm what applies.
• Weather: have a plan B under cover, or embrace the rain with an umbrella. See rainy-day ideas.
• Something personal: a dog, a favourite café or the place you met all make pictures that are yours.

Professionally edited images in a private online gallery. How many images and how quickly they arrive varies by photographer and session, and both are confirmed in your quote. Prints start from £25 and albums from £200.
