Planning a Cornwall elopement

  • Check the tide times first. Choose your date and time around low tide if you want a beach. Tides shift by roughly an hour a day.
  • Respect the cliffs. Edges can be unstable and are often unfenced. Stay on the South West Coast Path and away from overhangs.
  • Avoid August if you can. The school holidays bring heavy traffic, busy beaches and full car parks. May, June and September are often calmer.
  • Allow for narrow lanes. Many coves are reached by single-track roads with passing places. Travel takes longer than the map suggests.
  • Plan for sea mist and wind. Weather on the coast changes quickly; bring a layer and keep a backup spot inland or sheltered.
  • Getting there. There are direct trains from London Paddington to Penzance, though it is a long journey; a car is useful for reaching coves.
