Newquay is built around its beaches. Fistral, on the western side of town, is a broad, Atlantic-facing surf beach backed by dunes; in the town itself, Towan Beach has a house on a rock island joined to the mainland by a small suspension bridge; and to the north-east, Watergate Bay runs for around two miles below the cliffs.
Around them are headlands with long views — Towan Head, with the whitewashed Huer's Hut, and Trevelgue Head near Porth — and a string of coves, from Crantock across the Gannel estuary to Holywell Bay. Bedruthan and the wider north coast of Cornwall are a short drive up the coast.

Photographing Newquay
Most of Newquay's beaches face north-west into the Atlantic, so summer sunsets drop over the sea; Fistral and Watergate Bay are both strong sunset beaches. The surf adds movement and texture, and on bigger days the spray catches the low light.
The headlands give height. From Towan Head you look along Fistral and out to sea, and the grassy clifftops make a clean backdrop for couples. Crantock and Holywell have high dunes that give shelter from the wind and soft, sandy tones, and the twin Gull Rocks off Holywell make a simple focal point.
Midday light on open sand is hard, so most sessions are early or late. In autumn and winter, the lower sun and bigger swells make for dramatic, moody frames, and the beaches are far quieter. At low tide, wet sand at Watergate Bay and Fistral turns into a mirror for the sky, which gives simple, striking silhouettes of couples and families walking along the water's edge.

Getting there and around
Newquay station is at the end of a branch line from Par, which is on the main line from London Paddington; trains on the branch are infrequent, with some through services in summer, so check timetables. Cornwall Airport Newquay is a few miles from town.
By car, Newquay is reached from the A30. Summer traffic into town and to the beach car parks is heavy, especially on changeover Saturdays, so plan to arrive early. The town beaches are walkable from the centre; Crantock, Holywell and Watergate Bay are easier by car.
Planning your shoot
July and August are busy, especially at Fistral and the town beaches. May, June and September are quieter, with warm evenings. Surf, currents and tides are serious here: sessions stay out of the water unless you have planned otherwise, and your photographer will check tide times for Watergate Bay, Crantock and Holywell.
Coastal wind is common, and the dunes at Crantock and Holywell give shelter. National Trust beaches may need permission for professional photography; your photographer will confirm what applies.
