Photographers in Gloucester

Gloucester Docks give red brick, iron bollards, swing bridges and moored boats on still water, all within a few minutes' walk. The warehouses' repeated windows make strong backgrounds for portraits and branding, and the basins give reflections at blue hour when the lights come on.

The cathedral is the other anchor. Outside, the lawns give a clear view of its Perpendicular Gothic tower; inside, the cloisters have some of the earliest surviving fan vaulting anywhere, with soft, even light from the windows. Around the cathedral are narrow lanes such as College Court, home to the House of the Tailor of Gloucester, linked to Beatrix Potter's story.

For greenery, the ruins of Llanthony Secunda Priory sit beside the canal near the docks, and Robinswood Hill, a country park on the southern edge of the city, has open grassland with views over Gloucester and the Severn Vale.

Overcast days suit the brick and stone well, and the docks are at their most atmospheric on winter evenings, when the warehouse lights reflect in the water.

Gloucester station has direct trains from Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Cheltenham, plus services to London Paddington, some direct and some with a change. The station is a short walk from the cathedral and around 15 minutes on foot from the docks.

The M5 runs just east of the city, and there are car parks close to the docks and the Gloucester Quays shopping area. The Cotswold escarpment and villages such as Painswick are a short drive away, as is the Forest of Dean.

Gloucester is less crowded than the Cotswold villages, which makes weekend sessions easier to plan. The docks host events through the year, including a tall ships festival in some years and a Christmas market at Gloucester Quays, so check dates if you want quiet quays or would like the atmosphere.

The cathedral holds daily services and occasional filming, which can close parts of the building. If the cloisters matter to you, your photographer will confirm access and permission well ahead. Riverside paths along the Severn can flood in winter, so keep the docks as your wet-weather option.
