Photographers in Jurassic Coast

The coast faces broadly south, so the sun moves along the sea through the day: early and late light rakes across the cliffs, and in winter the low sun sets over the sea to the south-west. Clear days bring turquoise water to the coves around Lulworth; stormy ones bring dramatic skies.

The colour changes along the coast: red sandstone in East Devon, grey clays and golden sandstone around Charmouth, West Bay and Golden Cap, then the bright white chalk of Purbeck. Durdle Door and Man O'War beach beside it give clear water on sunny days, and Old Harry Rocks rise from the sea at the end of the Purbeck chalk, with a grassy clifftop above that makes a clean, open backdrop.

Lyme Regis adds a harbour and the Cobb, its curving stone breakwater, and Kimmeridge Bay has flat rock ledges and rock pools. In spring, wildflowers cover the clifftops; summer is busy but light lasts late; autumn and winter bring moody skies and near-empty beaches.

Trains reach both ends. At the east, Wareham and Weymouth have trains from London Waterloo via Bournemouth; at the west, Exmouth is reached from Exeter. Axminster, on the Waterloo–Exeter line, is the nearest station to Lyme Regis.

Between them, the A35 and small roads link the coast, and many spots — Durdle Door, Lulworth, Kimmeridge — are down narrow lanes with limited parking. From Bournemouth and Poole, the Sandbanks chain ferry crosses to Studland for Old Harry Rocks; check its timetable and any closures.

July and August bring heavy crowds and full car parks at Durdle Door and Lulworth, so go early or late, or come in May, June or September. Cliff falls and landslips are common, especially after wet weather: stay away from cliff bases and edges and follow local signs.

Check tide times for beaches such as Charmouth and Kimmeridge. The army ranges east of Lulworth are only open on some weekends and during school holidays, so check before planning walks there. Much of the coast is National Trust or private estate land, and professional photography may need permission; your photographer will confirm what applies.

Summer weekend sunsets at Durdle Door are in demand, so a weekday or early-morning slot can give you more choice.
