Photographing St Ives
St Ives sits on a small peninsula, so there is water on almost every side, and light bounces off the sea and pale sand. Porthminster, facing east across the bay towards Godrevy lighthouse, suits the morning; Porthmeor faces north-west to the Atlantic, catching summer sunsets and surf; and the harbour glows in soft evening light as the tide goes out and boats settle on the sand.
The Island — a grassy headland with St Nicholas Chapel on top — gives panoramic views and sunsets over the sea. The old town, known as Downalong, is a warren of narrow lanes, granite steps and whitewashed cottages that suit close, intimate portraits.

Getting there and around
The St Ives Bay Line runs from St Erth, on the main line from London Paddington to Penzance, along the dunes and beaches of the bay to St Ives. The station is above Porthminster Beach, a short walk from the harbour.
Driving into town is hard work in summer: streets are extremely narrow, and parking is limited and fills early. A park-and-ride using the train from Lelant Saltings has run in summer — check current arrangements — and there are car parks on the edge of town. Once there, everything is on foot, with some steep hills.
Planning your shoot
July and August are very busy, and the harbour and beaches are crowded by late morning. May, June and September give long days and fewer visitors. For a quiet session go early; for sunset in summer, the Island and Porthmeor are the obvious choices.
Check tides: the harbour beach almost disappears at high water, while at low tide the boats sit on the sand. Gulls will take food, so leave snacks until after the session. On a wet day, the lanes of Downalong give a little shelter, and your photographer will talk through rescheduling if the weather is truly bad.
