Photographers in Guildford

Guildford gives a lot of variety for a town of its size. The High Street is steep and lined with a mix of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings, with setts underfoot, so it photographs as a sloping stage with depth behind you.

The Castle Grounds are a public garden around the ruins of a Norman keep, with colourful bedding and lawns: good for families and relaxed portraits. The River Wey runs through the town past Millmead Lock and on to Dapdune Wharf, where the National Trust looks after the history of the Wey Navigation, with an old barge and riverside buildings.

Guildford Cathedral, built in the twentieth century on Stag Hill, is plain red brick outside, with open lawns around it and views over the town. Its simple lines suit clean, modern portraits and personal branding.

The Surrey Hills are the landscape option. Newlands Corner looks south over wooded hills and is popular at sunset. St Martha's Hill has a small church on its summit, reached by a sandy climb, with views on every side. Bluebells appear in local woods from late April into May, and the hills turn golden in autumn.

Direct trains run to Guildford from London Waterloo in around forty minutes, and there are direct services to Reading and Gatwick Airport. The main station is a few minutes' walk from the river and the bottom of the High Street.

The High Street, the Castle Grounds and the riverside are all walkable from each other. The cathedral is uphill, about twenty minutes' walk from the station, or a short drive. Newlands Corner and St Martha's Hill are a few miles east of the town and easiest to reach by car.

Guildford is a short drive from Windsor and south-west London, including Richmond.

The High Street is busiest on Saturdays; early mornings and Sundays are calmer. Roads into the town, and the A3, can be slow at peak times, so allow extra time if you are driving to the session.

The Surrey Hills are busy with walkers and cyclists on sunny weekends. Paths can be muddy after rain, and St Martha's Hill is sandy and steep, so bring suitable shoes for walking.
