What a relaxed family session looks like

The pictures most families treasure are not the lined-up ones. They are the in-between moments: a toddler running at a parent, a grandparent laughing, siblings arguing over a stick. A relaxed session is built to produce those.

Your photographer usually starts with a quick group picture while everyone is fresh and tidy, so that is in the bag. After that, it is mostly walking, playing and small prompts ("race to the tree", "whisper something to Dad") rather than posing. Short bursts of attention work better than long ones, and a good photographer will read when a child needs a break.

Planning around ages and attention spans

• Babies: they set the pace. Plan around feeds and bring whatever settles them. For the first weeks, newborn photography is a separate, slower session, usually at home.
• Toddlers: expect about 20 minutes of real cooperation, spread across the session. Snacks, bubbles and a favourite toy help. Do not ask them to smile; let the photographer play.
• Primary-age children: they enjoy games, challenges and being given a job, such as holding the photographer's reflector.
• Teenagers: tell them how long it will take and let them choose a bit of what they wear. Give them some shots on their own terms and they tend to relax.

Timing around naps and light

The softest light is early morning and the hour or so before sunset. For families with young children, the timing that matters more is the one around naps and meals. In England, summer sunsets come after 9pm in June, well past most bedtimes, so a morning session is often the better choice for under-fives. In winter the light fades by mid-afternoon, which suits little ones nicely.

A tired, hungry child is the hardest thing to photograph, so feed everyone first and choose a slot when they are usually happiest.

Parks and beaches by region

• London: Richmond Park, Hampstead Heath and Greenwich Park give open space, trees and views. Royal Parks may require permission for professional photography, which your photographer will check. See family photoshoots in London and our London family photoshoot guide.
• South East: the pebble beach and seafront in Brighton, or ponies and heathland in the New Forest.
• South West: sandy beaches in Cornwall and around St Ives, calmer outside the August rush.
• Midlands: dales, rivers and stepping stones in the Peak District.
• North: lakeshores in the Lake District, or the walls and river paths in York.

What to wear

• Choose two or three colours that sit well together, rather than matching outfits.
• Avoid large logos and busy prints, which pull the eye away from faces.
• Pick clothes children can sit, run and climb in, plus shoes that suit the ground: sand, grass or mud.
• Bring layers. English weather can turn, and a cold child does not smile.

Grandparents and multi-generation trips

A family trip with grandparents is often the rare time everyone is in one place, so it is worth planning properly. Tell us about anyone with limited mobility, and your photographer can suggest a spot with step-free paths, benches and short distances. Photograph the big group first while everyone is together, then split into smaller groups: each household, the grandchildren with their grandparents, and the grandparents on their own. Larger groups may need a little more time, which your quote will reflect.
