The Quayside is the heart of most Newcastle sessions. The bridges layer on top of each other when you look upriver, and in the evening they are lit, which gives blue-hour portraits a distinctive city backdrop. The Millennium Bridge's curve works well as a leading line, and the Gateshead bank gives the classic view back across to the Tyne Bridge and the Quayside.

Grey Street and the streets around Grey's Monument have pale stone, columns and long curving facades, ideal for polished portraits, engagements and branding. The Central Arcade adds colourful tiled walls and a covered option in rain.

The Ouseburn valley is more informal: brick warehouses, arches and the Ouseburn river, with a creative, slightly rough-edged character that suits couples and personal branding who prefer texture.

Jesmond Dene offers a completely different mood: woodland, a stream, stone footbridges and a waterfall by the ruined mill, with dappled light in summer and strong colour in autumn. It suits families, maternity and relaxed couple sessions.

Newcastle Central station has direct trains from London King's Cross and Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line, and regular services from Durham, York, Leeds and Manchester. Newcastle International Airport is linked to the city by the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The centre is walkable. Grey Street and the Central Arcade are a few minutes from the station, and the Quayside is a steep walk down. The Millennium Bridge takes you across to Gateshead on foot. The Ouseburn is a short walk east along the river from the Quayside.

Jesmond Dene is a few miles north of the centre, reached by Metro, bus or car. The Metro also runs to the coast at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay if you want to add a beach to your plans. City-centre parking is mostly in paid car parks.

Timing. The Quayside looks its finest at the end of the day, when the light softens and the bridges are lit. Weekend evenings are lively, so earlier golden hour or a weekday is calmer.

Events. The Great North Run, usually held in September, crosses the Tyne Bridge and closes roads. Big events at the football stadium and concerts on the Quayside also affect traffic and crowds.

Weather. Wind off the river can be strong and cold, so bring layers even in summer. The Central Arcade and the Grainger Market nearby are covered options, both private, so permission may be needed.
