Photographers in Leeds

The centre of Leeds is at its most photogenic in its covered and semi-covered spaces. The Victoria Quarter's arcades have mosaic floors, carved wood and a long stained-glass roof over Queen Victoria Street, which gives warm, even light in almost any weather. The Corn Exchange's round, domed interior is striking from the upper gallery.

Out in the open, the civic buildings around the Headrow and Park Square give formal stone backdrops that suit headshots and branding work. Park Square's central garden adds greenery without leaving the business district.

The waterfront has a different mood. Granary Wharf, where the Leeds and Liverpool Canal begins beside the station, mixes old brick arches with new glass, and the Dark Arches below the station carry the River Aire through Victorian brick vaults. Leeds Dock, home to the Royal Armouries, offers open water and a cleaner, contemporary look.

Kirkstall Abbey gives Gothic arches and tall ruined walls against trees, and changes character with the seasons: green in summer, golden in autumn. Roundhay Park is large enough for a whole session, with Waterloo Lake, woodland paths and the walled Canal Gardens.

Leeds station is in the city centre, with direct trains from London King's Cross and frequent services from Manchester, York, Sheffield and Newcastle. Leeds Bradford Airport is to the north-west of the city.

Most city-centre spots are walkable from the station: Granary Wharf is next to it, the Victoria Quarter and Park Square are a short walk away, and Leeds Dock is a walk along the river.

Kirkstall Abbey and Roundhay Park are a few miles out, reached by bus, taxi or car. If your session combines the centre with either, allow time for the transfer and check parking in advance. City-centre parking is mostly in paid car parks, and charges vary.

Timing. The Victoria Quarter and the centre are busiest on Saturdays and in the weeks before Christmas. Weekday mornings are quieter, which also suits headshots and branding work before the working day.

Seasons. Kirkstall Abbey and Roundhay Park are at their most colourful in autumn. Summer evenings are long enough for a golden-hour session at Leeds Dock.

Weather. Leeds has good covered options. The arcades and the Dark Arches keep a session going in rain, so a city-centre plan is easier to protect than a park one.

Permissions. The Victoria Quarter, the Corn Exchange and parts of the waterfront are privately managed, and council parks and Kirkstall Abbey may have their own requirements for commercial photography. Your photographer will confirm what applies, and any fee is quoted separately.
