Tudor streets

Henley Street, Sheep Street, Church Street and Chapel Street mix timber-framed and Georgian buildings. Black-and-white timber gives strong contrast, so overcast days, which soften it, are no bad thing here. On Church Street, the Guild Chapel, the Guildhall and the almshouses form a long run of old buildings; the schoolroom above the Guildhall is where Shakespeare is thought to have been taught.

The river

Bancroft Gardens run from the canal basin, where the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal meets the Avon, to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, whose brick tower looks over the water. The Gower Memorial, with Shakespeare seated above figures from the plays, stands in the gardens. Across the river, the Recreation Ground gives open views back to the theatre, and the hand-operated chain ferry and the medieval stone Clopton Bridge add period detail.

Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity Church stands on the riverbank south of the theatre. The path to its porch runs beneath an avenue of lime trees, a natural frame for couples walking towards the camera, and the churchyard slopes down to the water.

Seasons

Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons, with softer light and the limes turning gold in October. Summer evenings are long and warm but busy. Around Shakespeare's birthday on 23 April the town holds celebrations with processions and crowds.

Stratford-upon-Avon station, a short walk west of the centre, has trains from Birmingham and from London Marylebone, although many London journeys involve a change. The town centre, riverside and Holy Trinity are all walkable; Holy Trinity is at the southern end of the river walk. Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery is about a mile west and can be reached on foot along a signed path.

By car, Stratford is easily reached from the M40. Car parks in and around the centre fill early on summer weekends and around theatre performances, so arrive early or allow time to walk in from further out. Warwick is a short drive away if you want a second location.

Start early. In summer the streets and gardens are quiet before about 9am; after that, coach tours and day visitors arrive, especially at weekends and in school holidays. Winter weekdays are the calmest time of year, and late April is busy around Shakespeare's birthday.

Several key buildings are managed: the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust properties are ticketed, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre belongs to the RSC, and Holy Trinity is a working parish church. Each has its own approach to professional photography, and your photographer will confirm what applies.
