Canals and brick

Birmingham's central canals sit below street level, lined with Victorian brick and crossed by iron footbridges. That enclosure softens the light: on a bright day the towpaths around Gas Street Basin give open shade and warm colour bounced off the brickwork, which flatters skin tones. The lit bar fronts and moored narrowboats make the basin a good place to keep working into dusk.

Modern architecture

The Library of Birmingham, opened in 2013, is wrapped in interlocking metal rings that throw patterned shadows in low sun, and its terraces give height over Centenary Square without a long climb. At the Bullring, the curved Selfridges building and its thousands of aluminium discs suit fashion and bold portrait styles, and St Martin's church sits directly below it, so old and new share the frame.

The Jewellery Quarter

The Jewellery Quarter has a different mood: red-brick workshops, cast-iron street furniture, the Chamberlain Clock and St Paul's Square, a rare surviving Georgian square around an 18th-century church. It is calmer than the centre and suits relaxed couple and engagement sessions. Digbeth, east of the centre, adds street art and railway arches for a grittier look.

Seasons

The canals are most atmospheric on autumn and winter evenings, when the lights come on early. Summer weekends bring crowds to Brindleyplace and the basin, so earlier starts help.

Birmingham New Street has direct trains from London Euston, Manchester, Bristol and many other cities; Chiltern Railways services from London Marylebone arrive at Moor Street and Snow Hill. Most central spots are walkable from New Street: Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace lie to the west, the Jewellery Quarter to the north-west and the Bullring next to the station. The West Midlands Metro tram stops at St Paul's and the Jewellery Quarter if you want to save the walk.

If you are driving, check whether your vehicle is affected by the Clean Air Zone inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, where vehicles that do not meet its emission standards pay a daily charge. The GOV.UK vehicle checker will tell you. Central car parks fill on concert and event days, so leave extra time.

Birmingham is a good choice in changeable weather because shelter is never far away: canal bridges, Grand Central's concourse and the covered areas around the library all give you somewhere to wait out a shower. Plan a route rather than a single location, so your photographer can adapt to rain or crowds.

Weekday mornings are quietest in the centre. At weekends, Brindleyplace, Gas Street Basin and the Bullring are busy from late morning, and the basin is lively in the evening. In the weeks before Christmas the centre usually hosts a large Christmas market, which adds lights but also crowds.

Several spots here are privately managed, including Brindleyplace and the Bullring, and the canals are looked after by the Canal & River Trust. Rules for professional photography differ between them, and your photographer will confirm what applies to your session.
