Castle and river

The castle is at its most impressive from the river. From Castle Bridge the walls rise straight from the water, with the ruined medieval bridge in the foreground; on still days the Avon gives reflections. St Nicholas Park, just upstream, has open grass along the river for relaxed family and couple sessions.

St Mary's and the Georgian town

St Mary's Church has a tall tower that is visible from most of the town, and a churchyard with trees and old headstones. Much of the centre was rebuilt after a fire in 1694, which is why Georgian brick and stone fronts on Church Street, Northgate Street and Jury Street sit beside older timber-framed survivors. The mix gives varied, elegant backdrops within a few streets.

Gates and timber

The Lord Leycester Hospital, a cluster of timber-framed medieval buildings against the West Gate, is Warwick's most striking half-timbered façade. The East Gate, topped by a small chapel, closes the other end of the old main street. Mill Street, running down towards the river beside the castle, has timber-framed cottages and a glimpse of the castle walls at its end.

Seasons

Spring and autumn suit Warwick best, with softer light and fewer visitors. Summer weekends and school holidays bring heavy visitor numbers to the castle end of town, so early starts help.

Warwick station has Chiltern Railways trains from London Marylebone and Birmingham. The town centre is a walk of roughly 10 minutes from the station, and the castle, St Mary's and the two gates are all close together. Warwick Parkway, on the edge of town, is the more convenient station if you are driving and switching to the train.

By car, Warwick is just off the M40. Town-centre car parks are small and fill on summer weekends and castle event days; the castle has its own paid parking for visitors. Leamington Spa adjoins the town and Stratford-upon-Avon is a short drive away, so it is easy to combine locations.

Aim for weekday mornings, or early evening in summer, when the castle crowds have thinned and the light on the river is softer. School holidays and castle events bring heavy traffic and full car parks.

Warwick Castle is privately operated and ticketed; entry, access to the grounds and any professional photography are at the operator's discretion. Most of what makes Warwick photogenic, including the river view, St Nicholas Park and the old streets, is public, and your photographer can build a session around those if a castle session is not practical.

For wet weather, the arches of the East and West Gates give brief cover and the town's cafés are close by. A light drizzle can still suit the old streets.

Warwick sessions are quoted from our standard starting prices, for example a couple photoshoot from £250 or engagement photography from £300. Castle admission for you and your photographer, and any permission fee for professional photography there, would be quoted separately, as would parking. Sessions using only the public river views and streets avoid those costs.
