Photographing Lincoln
The cathedral
Lincoln Cathedral's west front, with its Norman core inside a later Gothic screen, fills the view through Exchequer Gate, the medieval gatehouse opposite. The pale limestone responds strongly to low sun, turning honey-coloured in the evening. Minster Yard, around the cathedral, has period houses and lawns for quieter portraits.
The castle
Lincoln Castle, begun by William the Conqueror in 1068, has high walls you can walk as part of a visit, looking across the rooftops to the cathedral. Inside are lawns and the Victorian prison building. The castle also holds one of the four surviving 1215 copies of Magna Carta.
Steep Hill and Bailgate
Steep Hill lives up to its name, and the gradient makes for layered shots, with rooftops and shopfronts stacking down the slope. The Jew's House and Norman House are 12th-century stone houses still in use. Bailgate, at the top, has Georgian shopfronts leading to Newport Arch, a Roman gateway that traffic still passes through.
The lower city
Brayford Waterfront is a marina basin with boats, swans and the University of Lincoln's modern buildings, and the open water gives wide skies at sunset. The High Bridge, known locally as the Glory Hole, is a short walk away, its timber-framed buildings reflected in the Witham.

Getting there and around
Lincoln station is in the lower city. Some LNER services run direct from London King's Cross, while others need a change at Newark; there are also trains from Nottingham and Sheffield. Brayford Waterfront and the High Bridge are a few minutes' walk from the station.
The uphill area is a stiff climb via the High Street and Steep Hill, so allow time, or take a taxi or bus up and walk down during the session. By car, the uphill car parks near the castle and cathedral are small and fill on busy days; parking in the lower city and working uphill can be easier. Steep Hill is not suitable for wheelchairs, and pushchairs are hard work in places, so plan transport to the top if you need to.
Planning your shoot
The uphill area is busy at weekends, in summer and during events at the castle and cathedral; weekday mornings are calmer. The hilltop is exposed, so wind can be noticeable in Castle Square even when the lower city is sheltered, and wet cobbles on Steep Hill are slippery.
The cathedral and the castle each manage their own photography rules. Castle Square, Minster Yard's paths, Steep Hill and Bailgate are public streets, and your photographer can plan around them if permission inside is not practical.
The uphill streets are decorated and busy in the run-up to Christmas; check the city's events listings before choosing a December date.
